Larissa Sansour / Søren Lind

As If No Misfortune Had Occurred in the Night

Maschinenhaus M1

The focus of Larissa Sansour and Søren Lind’s (* 1973 in East Jerusalem / * 1970 in Denmark, live in London) large- scale installation is the three-channel video work As If No Misfortune Had Occurred in the Night (2022). The featured operatic aria, sung by soprano Nour Darwish, combines the Palestinian traditional song Al Ouf Mash’al with Gustav Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder. The work deals with loss, collective trauma, and rituals of mourning.

Politiken der Trauer
Conversation with Çiğdem Inan (Sociologist and publisher, Berlin), Lydia Röder (Palliative care expert and bereavement counsellor, Berlin) and Senthuran Varatharajah (Writer, philosopher and theologian, Berlin), moderated by Katja Kynast (KINDL)

The evening will illuminate the themes of loss, mourning and traumata from various perspectives. What are the political dimensions of mourning, and what meaning do feeling, remembering and reflecting have within them? The conversation is dedicated to the requiem and forms of the poetics of bereavement, the trauma experience of racialised and minoritized people and the experienced disacknowledgement of mourning and loss, as well as to approaches to individual grief counselling in various life situations involving mourning.

Arabic Opera Event
Performance by Nour Darwish (Soprano, Tel Aviv), Film screening In Vitro (2019), Q&A with Larissa Sansour (Artist, London) and Søren Lind (Author and artist, London)

The evening offers a multifaceted look into the artistic work of Larissa Sansour and Søren Lind.
The two artists will present their work In Vitro, conceived for the Danish pavilion of the Biennale di Venezia 2019, for the first time in Germany. The 28-minute science fiction work revolves around the dialogue of two scientists in a post-apocalyptic world 30 years after an environmental disaster.

The highlight of the evening will be the German premiere of the live performance of the exhibition As If No Misfortune Had Occurred in the Night (2022) with soprano Nour Darwish. The opera aria, composed especially for this work by Anthony Sayhoun, allows Gustav Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder to merge with the Palestinian song Al Ouf Mash’al to create a new composition. The live singing will be performed together with a video version created especially for this format and, in combination with Nour Darwish’s performance, offers the opportunity for an immersive experience.

This is followed by a Q&A with Larissa Sansour and Søren Lind, hosted by Kathrin Becker.
